2014 Year in Review

As 2014 came to a close I saw  posts from a few author’s blogs I follow doing a year in review or a recap of the previous year. It gave me the idea to do one of my own, but I hadn’t gotten around to it until now. So here goes nothing.

I only submitted one story for publication this past year. While I originally hoped for more I couldn’t be happier with the result. That one submission was accepted for publication and went live online in early July. “One in the Chamber” was part of Voluted Tales : Darkness Internal #2. It was my first story ever accepted.

That alone makes the year a win.

During the month of May, which happens to be National Short Story Month, I made a very strong effort to write a lot. I succeeded in completing 5 short stories. While all are currently in one step or another of the editing process the rough drafts are complete. Hopefully, a few of those will be sent out submission at some point in 2015.

The other writing adventures that I in progress during 2014 included my debut novel and a paranormal horror novella. I made limited progress on my novel, but continues to be a long term goal for me. The novella I began writing later in the year was originally an idea for a short story but has evolved into a longer project. We will see what 2015 has in store for these adventures.

Every good writer reads and to that I am no exception. As a kid I devoured books. As an adult I would love to have the time I did then to read now. I set myself an unspoken goal of reading a book a month. I surpassed that goal. I managed to read 15 books in 2014. One aspect of my life where I am an optimist in when it comes to books. I always hope that each book will be worthy of a 5 star review. A couple I read this year were, and sadly a few were far from it. My greatest joy in reading last year was having the opportunity to beta read a novel for a fellow author in an online/Facebook, the Fantasy Sci-Fi Network. I read, took notes, and corresponded with the author about my notes and suggestions. Raymond Bolton‘s book, Thought Gazer, was released January 1, 2015. I have a few books ahead of it on my To Be Read list, but I can’t wait to jump back into it to see the tweaks and changes made. The book was excellent before, it’s going to be fabulous the second time.

On an entirely personal note, the best thing to happen in 2014 was, being able to welcome our second son into the world this fall. I am thrilled to watch him learn and grow. Our first son can’t get enough of him and can’t wait until they can play together.

With 2014 done and gone I turn to 2015 and goals and “resolutions” for the coming year. While I have made some goals and resolutions in the past, this will be the first year that they are known to anyone other than myself and my wife. I feel like a note is necessary here because a few of the goals and fluid and others more concrete. We will see what gets accomplished when I return to these as we turn the calendar from 2015 to 2016.

  • Finish/edit/publish my paranormal horror novella
  • Finish my debut novel (tentatively titled Freedom)
  • Write 10+ short stories
  • Submit 8-10 stories to various markets
  • Sell/publish 3-5 stories
  • Read 25 books (10 being indie authors)
  • Find/join local writing group
  • Be more active on my blog
  • Create/promote/post to my Facebook author page

I do have a few other goals/resolutions, but they relate to running. Running is something I’ve taken up in the last few years and have come to enjoy greatly. Fabulous exercise and an excellent opportunity to be outside are two of the simplest reasons I run. That said, I aim to run 3 5k races, 2 10k races, and complete my second Half Marathon (13.1 miles).

I guess we’ll see in 11 and a half months how I’ve done. I’m looking forward to challenging myself this year.
